Take a recent Labor Day Grill-Out I attended here in South Florida.  There must have been 120 people there from all walks of life.  People from Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Germany, Argentina, and of course us Florida residents who migrated from different parts of the USA and Canada.  Point being there were many different cultures and backgrounds present, but the talk of the party was a woman who recently had a chemical peel.

There are many online sites that allow consumers to post their recent coupon codes to in an effort to allow other people to see what sort of discounts are being offered by companies. Sometimes companies I use to buy things online send way too many emails.  I haven’t really seen that trend remain consistent in skin care.  Most companies refrain from sending out daily updates and stick to announcing new products and sales.  (Those are the good emails!) So, I subscribe to many companies newsletters (how do you think I generate so much new content?) and am always kept abreast of these deals.  If I don’t like something or if it doesn’t say “save” somewhere in the email subject or first paragraph, I delete it.  No harm done.

Hopefully this helps you save some money on skin care products like eye creams.  Being a smarter consumer can help allow you to save money and try out products you would not normally have budgeted for.

In a Fox News article, a report listed eye creams as one of the TOP 10 Products Every Man Should Own.  When you see other items in the report such as “multivitamins,” you know it’s a serious list of products.  Here is a breakdown of what Fox reported in their top ten list, as well as some comments on what they had to say about eye creams.

Here is what Fox’s report said about  “Why it fights the aging process.”

Eye cream is designed to hydrate and deliver nutrients to the sensitive, thin skin around your eyes, where wrinkles often first appear. Top products either plump up skin to minimize the appearance of any fine lines you presently have or target the cell turnover process to slow the formation of future wrinkles.

How to use it: Use an eye cream twice daily — once in the morning and again before bed. A light touch is needed when applying this product as stretching out your skin will encourage wrinkles rather than get rid of them. Dab on eye cream by moving in semicircles toward your nose underneath your eye and on your lids. Store this stuff in the fridge if you also want to depuff under-eye bags and wake up tired eyes.

The list rounds out with an antioxidant moisturizer, a good re-usable water bottle,  great mattress, sunscreen, and weights/exercise equipment.  Sounds like a lot of stuff that most men do have, sans the skin care products.

The bottom line is that “looking young” is “in,” and everyone from celebrities to major men’s web portals like AskMen.com know that.  It’s good to see that a serious top ten list was released, and not the stress is on taking care of one’s self.  If you count the razor & shaving cream as skin-related products, you have five of the ten products coming from the skin care niche.

By the way, all you men out there, a woman wrote that article, so you can see that women are once again suggesting that good skin is what they want in their man!

The article talks about how facial fat around the eyes starts to fall off before anything, according to Rod Rohrich, MD, the chairman of plastic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.  The combination of thinning skin, as well as other elements such as the cold, wind, and sun, drain the tissue around the eyes and they quickly lose their plumped look as we age.

For this reason, Elle Magazine talks about the importance of hyaluronic acid, something we find as a base in many of the best eye creams we discuss and review here on a weekly basis.  In case you haven’t read past entries detailing the importance of hyaluronic acid, it’s worth pointing out that it “draws moisture from the air and holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water.”

Although more commonly found in anti wrinkle creams, retinol is another ingredient highlighted in the article.  If your skin can handle it, (many women find this to be a challenge), retinol will essentially stimulate collagen production and enhance the plumpness of the skin.

Other ingredients discussed in the article include vitamins C and E, as well as neuropeptides, which Dr. Nicolas Perric0ne says “In studies applying various neuropeptide preparations directly to the skin, exciting clinical benefits were observed almost immediately upon application.  There was visible improvement of the skin’s resilience, tone, and texture.”

Our test subject was a 31 year old Mother of one, a user of many beauty products and no stranger to eye serums.  The testing was done to see if the La Prairie Eye Serum was able to get rid of dark circles under the eyes and improve discoloration of skin, as the advertisements state.  So, we spent some money on Ebay, in order to get a better deal on this high-ticket eye product, and about three days later, it arrived. 

With high expectations, we started testing the La Prairie White Caviar Illuminating Eye Serum.  Here is a commentary written, just days ago, after a 30 day test run of the product.

"The product is immaculately packaged, and certainly has a unique look and feel.  A lot of detail went into this package, and for that reason it sort of sticks out and is hard to forget when you peruse your favorite beauty product retailer.  In fact, I had my eye on this product for about six months, but the high price of the product sort of kept me away from making a purchase.  Of course, once you use one product in a line of skin care products, you most certainly want to use the rest, as most skin products are formulated to work better in tandem anyways.  So, assuming I liked the product, I was sort of hesitant to "love" the product as it would certainly increase my spending on other products in their line.

With high expectations, I started my testing of this eye product.  It was a clever delivery system, with the push-down pump on top of the container, and one that looked really nice at first, but it was hard to get the proper amount of serum into the dropper that is connected to the cap.  I found it hard to apply the eye serum, and with most eye serums that come with medicinal droppers, it’s usually much easier than using an airless pump.  However, in the case of La Prairie, I think their advanced packaging sort of messed up the functionality of the product, which was disappointing.  When you pay a price point like this, the last thing you want to have on your mind is how to properly dispense the serum.  So, I was off to a bad start from the get-go.

When I finally was able to get the right amount out, I was very much relieved.  I found the serum to be a smooth, easy-to-apply product, and it absorbed rather rapidly, which is always a plus and something I look for in eye cream products.  Now, all I had to do was repeat this day and night for about 30 days and I was certain to see some results, right?

Well, I was wrong.  While I felt good for about 5-10 minutes each time I applied this product, I never really noticed any difference, even subtle, in my skin underneath the eyes.  30 days is a good testing period, and I have been able to notice results with other dark circle serums that I’ve used, (at much lower price points I may add.)  Maybe caviar should be kept at fine dining establishments and is best used as an hors d’oeuvre  at dinner parties.  For my skin’s trouble, and at the massive expense involved, (thank God Ebay saved a few bucks in that regard) this product did nothing for the appearance of the skin under my eyes.  I hate to give a bad review of such a popular product, but when the price is so high, it should do SOMETHING noticeable other than look good in my bathroom."
